Refuse to stay the same

How far have you made it into The Kodiak?

If you’ve spent any time in the world so far, you’ve probably noticed that it’s filled with a lot of characters. One piece of writing advice I was often given was to keep the cast small. It is solid advice. But as I followed Torr and Asha through their journey, they encountered far too many interesting people to leave behind.

In many ways, that’s true to life.

None of us become who we are on our own. We are shaped by parents, friends, rivals, mentors, strangers, and sometimes even enemies. Some people teach us valuable lessons. Others leave scars. Some inspire us to be better, while others become examples of who we never want to be. Whether those influences are positive or painful, they shape the people we eventually become.

That idea became one of my favorite parts of writing Kodiak.

Many of the supporting characters began as simple ideas. They existed to fill a role in the story or help move the plot forward. But something unexpected happened as the world grew. These characters developed lives of their own. Their experiences changed them. Their choices carried consequences. Their struggles left marks that could not simply be erased by turning the page.

One character in particular surprised me.

What began as a vulnerable figure caught in circumstances beyond her control slowly evolved into something far greater. Her journey became one of survival, resilience, heartbreak, and healing. She endured loss, carried burdens no one should bear, wrestled with jealousy, guilt, and grief, and still found reasons to keep moving forward. The person who emerged from those trials was not the same one who entered them.

And that’s what fascinates me about stories.

Real growth rarely happens through comfort. It often comes through hardship, difficult choices, and the relationships that challenge us to become something more than we were before. Sometimes we rise. Sometimes we fail. Most often, we do both.

As I look back through the artwork and early concepts that inspired this character’s evolution, I’m reminded how much she changed during the writing process. Not just in appearance, but in spirit. She became one of those rare characters who continually surprised me, forcing me to explore places in the story I never expected to go.

I hope that when you encounter her journey, you’ll find yourself reflecting on your own. Because while The Kodiak is a fantasy world filled with rugged mountains, bustling villages, and ancient mysteries, the people within it face struggles that are deeply human.

None of us stay the same.

And perhaps that’s the point.
